Lauren Falcao Bergquist is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Global Affairs at Yale University, previously holding roles at the University of Michigan and MIT. She specializes in development economics with a focus on agricultural markets and firms in sub-Saharan Africa. Bergquist holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley.
Her research explores agricultural market structures, policy impacts on food prices, and digital market innovations. She has conducted experimental studies in Kenya and Uganda, analyzing intermediary competition, firm entry dynamics, and arbitrage behavior. Her work emphasizes scaling policy interventions and understanding barriers to economic efficiency in African markets.
Bergquist is a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and holds affiliations with the Jameel Poverty Action Lab and the International Growth Centre (as Rwanda Lead Academic). She has received the Saieh Family Fellowship at the University of Chicago.
Her grants include the NSF CAREER award for agricultural market research, and her work spans collaboration with institutions like the World Bank and African governments. She advises on development strategies to enhance agricultural productivity and market integration in low-income regions.
