Jessica Goldberg is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland and directs the Promoting Achievement and Diversity in Economics (PADE) program. She is affiliated with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (JPAL), the Center for Global Development, and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Her research focuses on development and labor economics, particularly financial market imperfections, behavioral factors, and social networks in developing countries. She has conducted field experiments in Malawi, Uganda, India, and Zambia on topics like credit access, savings behavior, and disease treatment outreach.
Goldberg holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Public Policy from the University of Michigan (2011), an M.P.A. from Princeton University (2005), and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Stanford University (2001). She teaches courses such as Economic Development, Labor Economics, and Policy Impact Analysis at the University of Maryland.
Her work combines rigorous field experiments with policy relevance, addressing issues like agricultural savings, TB treatment incentives, and digital agricultural extension. She has advised students Tara Kaul and Giordano Palloni, and her research has been supported by grants from institutions like JPAL and the World Bank.
Goldberg collaborates with global teams on projects such as peer-based health messaging in Zambia, mobile money adoption in Bangladesh, and credit linkages among savings groups in Uganda. Her contributions bridge theoretical insights from behavioral economics with practical solutions for poverty alleviation and economic empowerment.
