Dr. Lauren Carruthers is an Affiliate Researcher at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine, the School of Chemistry, and the School of Infection & Immunity. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Parasitology and a PhD exploring interactions between Schistosoma mansoni infection, gut bacteria, and anti-helminthic treatments. Her work combines laboratory research with field studies, particularly in Uganda.
Her research focuses on characterizing zinc finger proteins in Plasmodium parasites, with support from a Wellcome Centre grant for studying the RNA interactome in Plasmodium berghei ookinetes. She also investigates drug resistance mechanisms in trypanosomes and microbiome interactions in parasitic diseases.
Dr. Carruthers has extensive international conference presentations and posters, including at BioMalPar, the Molecular Parasitology Meeting, and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Annual Meeting. She is passionate about public engagement, creating science cross-stitch patterns and running the 'Parasites in Stitches' social media platforms.
Her awards include the 2023 Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences Public Engagement Award and a 2019 art award from the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases. She has supervised Masters projects on Plasmodium berghei protein expression and taught in tropical medicine programs.
