معرفی
Karl Hoffmann is a Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University, where he leads research in parasitology, focusing on schistosomiasis and other helminth infections. He is a principal investigator in major externally funded projects including WORMVACS2.0 (Horizon Europe), and leads the Barrett Centre for Helminth Control (BCHC), contributing significantly to global efforts against neglected tropical diseases.
His research interests lie at the intersection of developmental biology, epigenetics, and gene regulation in parasitic helminths, particularly Schistosoma mansoni. His lab employs both hypothesis-driven and discovery-based strategies to identify new anthelmintic drugs and vaccine candidates. A central theme is leveraging functional genomics and epigenomic tools to uncover vulnerabilities in parasite biology.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trajectory in target-based drug discovery, with a focus on epigenetic regulators such as SmLSD1 and SmBRD3. His work increasingly spans cross-parasite applications, as seen in studies showing anti-malarial activity of anti-schistosomal compounds, and explores host-parasite interactions, including microbiome and immune modulation. His team also contributes to methodological standards, such as guidelines for extracellular vesicle research in helminths.
- Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2023)
- Research Prize, Sandler Center for Parasitological Research (2009)
Prof. Hoffmann actively supervises postgraduate researchers and collaborates with institutions including the Sanger Institute, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and Leiden University. His work includes advising Public Health Wales on swimmer’s itch and contributing to policy discussions on parasitic disease control. He has led numerous funded projects from Wellcome Trust, Innovate UK, and Life Sciences Research Network Wales, demonstrating sustained research leadership and grant acquisition.
He is involved in key research networks such as the Flatworm Functional Genomics Initiative (FUGI) and contributes to community roadmaps for rigorous parasitology research. His lab utilizes advanced imaging, high-throughput screening, and molecular techniques to study parasite viability and phenotype.
