Laurel Weldon is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at Simon Fraser University (SFU), located on unceded Coast Salish territories. She holds a BA from SFU, an MA from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on comparative public policy, global statistical analyses of women’s rights, feminist theory, and social movements, with a particular emphasis on violence against women and economic empowerment. She has served as an expert consultant for organizations including UN Women, the World Bank, and Indigenous governments in British Columbia.

Her academic contributions include groundbreaking global datasets on women’s rights, such as the Feminist Mobilization and Economic Empowerment project, which examines the role of women’s movements in advancing legal and economic equality. She co-authored the award-winning book The Logics of Gender Justice and edited the Oxford Handbook on Gender and Politics. Weldon also served as editor of the American Political Science Review (2020–present) and founded the Politics, Groups & Identities journal.
Weldon’s research highlights the transformative impact of feminist mobilization, including studies on intersectional solidarity in movements like #BlackLivesMatter and the global fight against gender-based violence. She has held prior roles as Distinguished Professor and Vice Provost at Purdue University, where she directed the Purdue Policy Research Institute and Center for Research on Diversity and Inclusion.
