Roles and Affiliations: Dr. Laurel Kearns is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Religion at Drew Theological School and the Graduate Division of Religion of Drew University. She has taught at Drew since 1994, instructing students at certification, master's, PhD, and D.Min levels. She serves on Drew University's Sustainability Committee and the American Academy of Religion's Religion and Ecology Steering Committee.
Education: Earned a B.A. (summa cum laude) in Religion, Art, and Humanities from Florida State University; M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology of Religion from Emory University's Institute of Liberal Arts (1994). Additional academic experience includes teaching and research roles at institutions like Monash University (Australia) and Columbia Seminary.
Research Interests: Focuses on religion's role in ecological issues, particularly Christian environmentalism, eco-justice, environmental racism, and global warming responses. Her work bridges sociology, environmental studies, and theology, exploring intersections of religion with social movements and sustainability. She actively contributes to initiatives like the Green Seminary Initiative and GreenFaith.
Publications: Over 20 years of publications include EcoSpirit: Religions and Philosophies for the Earth (2007), articles on religious climate activism, and contributions to encyclopedias like the Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature. Her recent work examines urban environmental justice and interfaith sustainability efforts.
Advocacy and Teams: Co-founded the Green Seminary Initiative and has been a board member of GreenFaith since 1995. Leads Drew's sustainability initiatives and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on eco-justice projects. Engaged in global environmental advocacy through academic conferences and institutional committees.
