Dr. Laura Tuohilampi is a Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) within the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her expertise lies in mathematics education, focusing on student engagement, teacher training, and innovative pedagogical strategies. She is the founder of Math Hunger and Maths for Humans, initiatives aimed at making mathematics accessible and enjoyable. Her work addresses national concerns about declining mathematics engagement and skill levels in Australia through projects like the Mathematics Growth Team and Wayfinders interactive show.
Dr. Tuohilampi holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Education) and has secured over $1 million in grants, including the Mathematics Growth Team ($723k) and Wayfinders series grants. Her research spans topics such as vertical contextualization in problem-solving, defining fun mathematics, and fostering teacher development through collaborative models. She has supervised 7 graduate students and authored over 27 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on affective factors in learning and curriculum design.
Her awards include the ECAN award (2021) and Finland’s Best Didactical Doctoral Thesis (2017). Beyond academia, she is an influential science communicator, emphasizing the human side of mathematics learning through media engagements and public outreach.
