Laura Stoker is Professor Emerita in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on political attitudes, generational change, and methodological innovations in social science research. She has contributed extensively to understanding family influences on political socialization and the dynamics of partisan polarization across generations. Stoker's work bridges political behavior, quantitative methodology, and policy analysis, with notable contributions to multi-level study design and the analysis of cohort effects.
Her academic leadership includes roles on the Board of the American National Election Studies and the British National Election Studies. She has held fellowships at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), Oxford University, and the University of Manchester. Stoker’s teaching spans political psychology and research methods at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Recent research emphasizes generational shifts in partisanship and affective polarization, with studies exploring how framing impacts policy solutions and the persistence of racial attitudes. Her methodological work addresses challenges in survey representativeness and the ethical implications of researcher flexibility in policy analysis. Stoker’s interdisciplinary approach integrates political theory, statistical rigor, and real-world policy applications.
Notable awards include fellowships from CASBS, Oxford, and Manchester. Her service extends to advisory roles such as the CASBS Causal Inference for Social Impact Lab. She remains active in mentoring through her office hours and collaborations in Berkeley’s political science community.
