Professor Laura Shallcross is a faculty member at the University College London (UCL) Institute of Health Informatics, where she leads translational research programs focused on reducing the impact of infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on health and social care systems. She combines routine data analysis with interdisciplinary methods (qualitative research, basic science, coproduction) to develop policy interventions.
- Doctor of Philosophy (University of London, 2014)
- Master of Science in Epidemiology (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 2009)
- Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (University of London, 2003)
- Bachelor of Arts (University of Oxford, 1999)
Her research focuses on epidemiology, infection control, and data-driven policy development, with a particular emphasis on care homes and vulnerable populations. She led the VIVALDI study, the largest UK study on COVID-19 in care homes, which directly influenced national testing policies. She also works on computational medicine through her role as Co-director of the UCLH/UCL Computational Medicine Theme.
Her recent publications (2024-2025) examine topics including:
- AMR-X framework for systemic antimicrobial resistance management
- Psychosocial impacts of respiratory outbreaks in care homes
- Antibiotic prescribing patterns in leukemia patients
- SARS-CoV-2 antibody dynamics in long-term care facilities
- 2021 - MBE for services to adult social care during the pandemic
She supervises PhD students and serves on national advisory bodies including the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) Social Care Working Group. Her research program aims to establish a national interventional research framework for infection management at the NHS-care home interface.
