Dr. Enas Newire is a Lecturer in Medical Microbiology at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Middlesex University. She specializes in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), CRISPR-Cas systems, and plasmid biology. Her research focuses on bacterial evolution, plasmid transfer dynamics, and novel anti-plasmid strategies. She has discovered a plasmid-borne Type IV-A CRISPR-Cas system that targets resistance plasmids, contributing to inter-plasmid competition mechanisms.
Enas holds a BSc from the American University in Cairo (AUC), an MSc from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and a PhD from University College London (UCL). She has held academic positions at UCL, University of Liverpool, University of Essex, AUC, and the US Naval Medical Research Unit-3. She teaches Medical Microbiology and supervises postgraduate research projects on AMR and infection control.
Her research has been published in journals such as Frontiers in Microbiology and Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, focusing on CRISPR-Cas systems, plasmid-mediated AMR, and novel antimicrobial strategies. She is a member of several professional societies, including the Microbiology Society and the American Society for Microbiology, and actively participates in committees addressing AMR and women in microbiology.
