She currently serves as a Research Associate on the Wellcome-funded project, 'The Future of Human Reproduction', focusing on the legal and ethical dimensions of emerging reproductive technologies.
Her research centers on healthcare law and bioethics, with a strong focus on:
- The regulation of reproduction, including novel assisted reproductive technologies, pregnancy, and family formation

- Health inequalities, with specific attention to the gender health gap
The analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent engagement with the ethical and legal challenges posed by cutting-edge biomedical innovations, particularly in human reproduction. Her work bridges law, ethics, and policy, often contributing to public discourse through both academic and accessible formats.
She has been involved in several interdisciplinary conferences, including the SLSA Annual Conference, the International Conference on Communication, Medicine and Ethics, and specialized symposia on IVG ethics. Her collaborative work highlights her integration within national and international research networks in bioethics and reproductive law.
Laura O'Donovan received her PhD from the University of Manchester in 2021. Her doctoral research examined the legal and ethical challenges associated with uterus transplantation. During her PhD, she completed a policy placement at the UK Cabinet Office, serving as a Policy Advisor in the Open Innovation Team, demonstrating her engagement with real-world policy development.
She is affiliated with the 'Future of Human Reproduction' research group at Lancaster University, a Wellcome Trust-supported initiative exploring the societal, ethical, and legal implications of transformative reproductive technologies.
