Laura Nuttall is a Professor of Gravitational Wave Astronomy at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation within the Faculty of Technology. She holds a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and has contributed to groundbreaking work in gravitational wave detection and multi-messenger astronomy.
Her research focuses on gravitational wave detector characterization, signal analysis, and electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave events via projects like GOTO. She co-leads the Gravitational-Wave Physics Group and participates in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, involving over 100 global institutes.
Key achievements include detecting gravitational waves from black hole and neutron star mergers, estimating neutron star equations of state, and developing techniques for future missions like LISA. Her work bridges observational astronomy, data analysis, and cosmology.
Notable awards include the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and the Chancellor’s Medal from Lancaster University. She supervises PhD students and actively engages in public outreach.
