Hsin-Yu Chen is an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Texas at Austin, affiliated with the Weinberg Institute and Center for Gravitational Physics. Previously, she held positions as a NASA Einstein-MIT Kavli Institute Fellow and Black Hole Initiative Fellow at Harvard University.
Her research focuses on gravitational waves, multi-messenger astrophysics, and the study of black holes and neutron stars. She actively participates in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Dark Energy Survey-Gravitational Wave working group, aiming to discover electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational-wave signals. Her work integrates observational data from gravitational wave detectors with multi-wavelength astronomy.
Key research themes include binary neutron star mergers, heavy element production, cosmological measurements of the Hubble constant, and signal detection algorithms for gravitational wave networks. She also explores the potential of future missions like LISA and Cosmic Explorer to advance gravitational wave astronomy.
Her publications highlight advancements in detecting gravitational waves from compact binaries, analyzing calibration uncertainties in cosmological measurements, and investigating eccentric black hole mergers. Collaborations with DECam, Swift-BAT, and CHIME/FRB underscore her multi-faceted approach to multi-messenger astrophysics.
Chen’s research has contributed to understanding the astrophysical origins of heavy elements and the cosmological implications of gravitational wave observations. She leads efforts in optimizing observational strategies for transient follow-up and refining detector network characterizations.
