Laura Miller is an Associate Professor and Executive Director of the Learning Centers at James Madison University (JMU), where she has served since 2006. She holds a Ph.D. in Composition and TESOL from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2017), an M.A. in English from Millersville University (2006), and a B.A. in English from Eastern Mennonite University (2003). Her research focuses on composition pedagogy, writing center studies, mindset theory, and RAD research. She investigates tutoring efficacy, learning outcomes assessment, and the impact of students' mindsets on writing performance. Her work also explores the psychological and physiological effects of tutoring, including stress levels among tutors and the efficacy of embedded writing interventions.
Dr. Miller is a co-author of the textbook So What? The Writer's Argument, now in its third edition, and has contributed to peer-reviewed journals such as Writing Center Journal and WLN: A Journal of Writing Center Scholarship. Her SELAP Continuum framework provides a model for assessing student employee learning and job performance. She actively engages in interdisciplinary projects, including integrating AI tools like ChatGPT into educational contexts.
Her contributions to writing center scholarship emphasize practical applications of research, bridging theory and practice in higher education. She leads the Learning Centers at JMU, fostering collaborative environments for student success through innovative tutoring strategies and evidence-based practices.
