Laura McCabe is an MSU Foundation Professor in the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University, with affiliations in the Genetics & Genome Sciences Program and Cell & Molecular Biology Program. Her research focuses on mechanisms of bone loss in type 1 diabetes, glucocorticoid use, estrogen-deficiency, and inflammatory bowel disease, emphasizing the role of gut microbiota dysbiosis and probiotic interventions.
Her work integrates microbiome studies, metabolomics, and mathematical modeling to explore the gut-bone signaling axis. She collaborates with Dr. Parameswaran and employs mouse models, bacterial systems, and human imaging to investigate transcription factor activity, stem cell lineage selection, and immune contributions to bone pathology.
Recent studies highlight probiotic efficacy in preventing bone loss, the impact of inflammation on marrow adiposity, and therapeutic strategies for osteoporosis. Her lab also examines signaling pathways like Wnt10b and PPAR in bone remodeling.
Professional roles include Associate Editor for the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry and editorial board memberships in Physiologic Reviews and JBMR Plus. She participates in national grant review panels (NIH, ADA, DOD) and scientific societies, chairing the American Physiology Society Science Policy Committee.
Collaborative efforts with Chemistry and Engineering faculty aim to enhance implant integration and fracture healing, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to bone health therapeutics.
