Laura Leante is Professor of Ethnomusicology at Durham University, specializing in North Indian classical music traditions and cross-cultural reception. She directs major research projects on musical meaning and performance practices.
Her research examines performance gestures, audience reception dynamics, and cross-modal associations in Hindustani classical traditions. Current investigations analyze how musicians and listeners co-construct meaning through raga performances, particularly examining monsoon-themed musical expressions. Her work integrates semiotic analysis with ethnographic observation of live performances.
Leante leads the AHRC-funded 'Khyal: Music and Imagination' project and coordinates the Race and Slavery Working Group. She supervises doctoral candidates investigating global music traditions and serves as coordinating committee member for the European Seminar in Ethnomusicology.
