Matthew Rahaim is a Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts, specializing in Ethnomusicology. He directs the Global Creative Studies division and maintains research affiliations with Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, American Studies, and Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender & Sexuality Studies. Rahaim is a Hindustani vocalist trained in Gwalior gayaki and works as a composer and improviser.
His research bridges raga traditions, vocal ethics, and experimental music. Key areas include:
- Hindustani vocal practices and moral philosophy
- Embodied gestural disciplines in music transmission
- Phenomenology of listening and voice
- Sonic ecologies and anthropocene soundscapes
- Interdisciplinary improvisation practices
