Laura J. Solomon is a Research Professor of Family Medicine and Psychology Emerita at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Psychological Science. She held academic roles from 1982–2008, including teaching health psychology and leading research on primary and secondary prevention of major health issues like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and AIDS. Her research emphasized behavior change to improve health, particularly among lower-income populations.
Education: B.A., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1975); M.S. and Ph.D., Virginia Tech (1977, 1981). She advised over 50 dissertation committees and supervised 30+ students. Awards include Phi Beta Kappa and Fellow status in the Society of Behavioral Medicine.
Research focuses on breast cancer screening, HIV risk reduction, and smoking cessation. Collaborations include the Office of Health Promotion Research and the Human Behavioral Pharmacology Lab. She held leadership roles in organizations such as the American Heart Association-VT Affiliate and Vermont Cancer Center, contributing to public health initiatives statewide.
