Hyman's research focuses on happiness as a sociological phenomenon, examining its cultural discourses, emotional dimensions, and methodological measurement challenges. She employs mixed methods to analyze how individuals construct and perceive happiness within social contexts.
Her publications reveal a critical engagement with happiness metrics, time diary methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches to well-being. Key themes include social construction of happiness, subjectivity in research, and limitations of quantitative indicators.
Hyman serves as a PhD supervisor and convenes the British Sociological Association’s Happiness Study Group, organizing events on sociological inquiry into happiness. She actively contributes to methodological debates through editorial and academic activities.
