Laura Hondebrink is an Assistant Professor at University Medical Center Utrecht within the Strategic Brain Program. As a European registered toxicologist with over 10 years of experience, she focuses on neurotoxicity and clinical toxicology through observational studies of poisonings with psychoactive substances to protect public health and develop policy strategies.
Her primary research areas include:
- Neurotoxicology
- Clinical Toxicology
- Risk Assessment of psychoactive substances
- MDMA, Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS), and nitrous oxide research
Her recent work analyzes European poison center data to study toxicovigilance of recreational drugs, clinical effects of cannabinoids versus synthetic alternatives, and neuropathy from nitrous oxide exposure. This research identifies emerging public health threats and informs regulatory decisions through evidence-based risk assessment.
Dr. Hondebrink serves as an expert for risk assessment of new psychoactive substances at the European Drug Agency (EUDA) and as treasurer for the Dutch Society of Toxicology, managing budgets, annual accounts, sponsorships, and organizational logistics.
