Laura F. Edwards is Class of 1921 Bicentennial Professor in the History of American Law and Liberty and Professor of History at Princeton University. Previously, she taught at Duke University for twenty years. Her research examines 19th-century U.S. legal history, focusing on slavery, gender, and material culture.
Edwards authored award-winning books including The People and Their Peace (Charles Sydnor Prize, Littleton-Griswold Prize) and Only the Clothes on Her Back (Merle Curti Prize, SHEAR Best Book, John Phillip Reid Prize). Current research investigates how the shift from unwritten to written law affected women's property relations and contributed to their economic dispossession.
