Laura Edwards is a Professor in the Department of History at Princeton University, specializing in legal history of the American South. She joined Princeton in winter 2020 after 19 years at Duke University, where she was promoted from Associate Professor (2001) to full Professor (2005). Her prior appointments include UCLA (1997-2001) and University of South Florida (1993-97).
Her research centers on legal culture and inequality in the Post-Revolutionary South, with expertise in how ordinary citizens shaped legal systems. Edwards' work bridges historical analysis with socio-legal studies, examining power dynamics in marginalized communities.
Edwards has received significant recognition including the Charles Sydnor Prize for best book on Southern history and the Littleton-Griswold Prize for excellence in American legal history scholarship.
She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. from Northwestern University. Her mentoring and research continue to influence historical methodologies in legal scholarship.
