Amy Murrell Taylor is the T. Marshall Hahn Jr. Professor of History at the University of Kentucky, specializing in 19th-century U.S. Southern history with a focus on the Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction. Her acclaimed book Embattled Freedom (2018) won numerous awards including the Frederick Douglass Book Prize and the Merle Curti Social History Award. She co-edits the UnCivil Wars book series with University of Georgia Press and serves on leadership roles in historical organizations like the Society of Civil War Historians.
Research interests include slavery’s aftermath, race/gender intersections, public history, and cultural memory. Current projects involve a new America: A Narrative History textbook (2025) and studies on Reconstruction’s material culture and Emancipation commemorations. Affiliations include African American Studies, Gender Studies, and Historic Preservation programs.
Award-winning educator, Taylor has received the Distinguished Professor of Arts & Sciences (2020-2021), University Research Professor (2020), and teaching honors like the Great Teacher Award (2016). Her work appears in major outlets like Times Literary Supplement and PBS.
