Laura Cleghorn serves as a Reader (Teaching and Research) in the Drug Discovery Unit within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. She is an active member of the Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research, contributing to the university's global reputation in infectious disease research.
Dr. Cleghorn's research focuses on the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for tuberculosis and parasitic diseases, particularly African trypanosomiasis. Her work spans multiple approaches including targeting MmpL3, lysyl tRNA synthetase, and Pks13 for tuberculosis treatment, and developing N-myristoyltransferase inhibitors for trypanosomiasis. Her fingerprint analysis shows strong expertise in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (100%), Trypanosoma brucei (69%), and drug discovery (57%).
Her publication record demonstrates consistent productivity from 2009 through 2025, with recent work focusing on tuberculosis drug targets. She has published in high-impact journals including ACS Infectious Diseases and Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, often serving as corresponding author on key papers.
- Brian Cox Prize for Excellence in Public Engagement with Research (2024)
- Science For All Badge (2023)
Dr. Cleghorn is actively involved in grant-funded research and collaborates extensively within the Drug Discovery Unit and with international partners. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being through the development of new treatments for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
She leads multiple research projects within the Drug Discovery Unit and is particularly noted for her contributions to public engagement, making complex drug discovery concepts accessible through exhibitions, talks, and interactive educational materials.
