Galadriel Hovel-Miner, Ph.D. (Columbia University, 2009), is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Stony Brook University's Renaissance School of Medicine. Her research leverages cutting-edge genetics and cell biology to combat Trypanosomatid parasites causing diseases like African Trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, and Leishmaniasis, which affect over 1 billion people globally.
Research focuses on:
- Forward genetic screening to identify drug resistance mechanisms
- Characterizing drug-induced trypanocidal phenotypes
- Functional analysis of resistance genes
- Studying alternative DNA break repair pathways using Trypanosoma brucei as a model
Recent publications (2020-2023) concentrate on parasite drug resistance mechanisms, particularly analyzing cytotoxic effects of anti-trypanosome compounds like fexinidazole and melarsoprol through molecular and genetic approaches.
Dr. Hovel-Miner leads the Hovel-Miner Lab, dedicated to translating discoveries into strategies that alleviate global health disparities caused by parasitic diseases.
