Jeremy Mottram

Professor Jeremy Mottram is a Professor of Pathogen Biology and Director of the York Biomedical Research Institute (YBRI) at the University of York. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of parasitic protozoa causing neglected tropical diseases like leishmaniasis and Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT). Key areas include cellular remodelling via protein kinases and autophagic pathways, virulence factors, and drug discovery.

His lab employs molecular genetics, CRISPR-Cas9 editing, and proteomic analyses to study Leishmania and Trypanosoma parasites. Projects are funded by MRC, GCRF, and the Wellcome Trust, targeting post-translational modifications and kinase inhibitors for anti-parasite therapies.

Teaching emphasizes infectious disease research, practical lab methods, and drug discovery. Students collaborate on projects involving parasite culture, genomic analysis, and computational biology. The lab also develops protocols like DiCre-based gene knockout systems for Leishmania.

Key collaborations include partnerships with GSK, Novartis, and Ubiquigent, advancing structure-based drug discovery for neglected diseases. Recent work includes identifying essential membrane transporters and drug candidates for leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.
