Laura Braden is an Assistant Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam's Department of Arts and Culture Studies, affiliated with the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. She holds fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation for Women’s Studies and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's ORDER program. Previously, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) at Emory University’s Sociology Department. Her research explores differential recognition in the visual art world, focusing on factors influencing artists' valorization in museums, textbooks, and auction markets. She earned her PhD from Emory University.
Her current projects examine exhibition networks, art collectors' status, and cultural policy. Key awards include the 2011 Center for Research Libraries’ Primary Source Award for innovative archival research. She actively participates in interdisciplinary initiatives like ERMeCHS clusters (ROCCS and Hum-Andr010d), addressing Responsible Organizations, Digital Humanities, and societal change.
Braden’s work bridges cultural sociology and art criticism, with publications in Poetics and other peer-reviewed journals. She advises on grants, serves on committees (e.g., NWO Rubicon Grants), and engages in public events like Wikipedia Edit-a-thons to address gender representation gaps.
