Carmen Longas Luque is a Lecturer at the Department of Media and Communication, Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She is also a PhD candidate at the Erasmus Research Center for Media, Communication & Culture, working on a Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)-funded project titled How racist is televised football and do audiences react? Her research is supervised by Dr. Jacco van Sterkenburg and Prof. Dr. Susanne Janssen.
Education:
- Bachelor of Psychology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2014)
- Research Master in Behavioural Science, Radboud University Nijmegen (2018)
Her research centers on the role of race and ethnicity in televised football, particularly in the Spanish context. She employs qualitative and discourse analysis methods to examine how race-related discourses are produced in football media and how they are received by audiences. Her work intersects media studies, cultural studies, sociology of sport, and critical race theory. She is particularly interested in the construction of national and ethnic identities through sports broadcasting and the implications for social inclusion and inequality.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on race discourse in European football media, including meta-analyses, content analyses, and audience studies. These works span diverse methodologies such as qualitative interviews, focus groups, and large-scale textual analysis, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to understanding media, identity, and power. The research often engages with real-world issues like diversity in sports leadership and youth perceptions of race.
Scientific Awards:
- Social media and sport as spaces for belonging (research grant, in a cooperation with Univ of VIC, Spain), 2023
Carmen has been actively involved in academic events promoting diversity in media and inclusive football. She has contributed to organizing and participating in international academic forums such as Representation of Diversity in Mediated Popular Culture (2024) and Contemporary Global Issues: Inclusive Football for the Future (2022). While no formal grants are listed beyond the awarded research collaboration, her work is embedded in a larger NWO-funded project, indicating significant research support. She is affiliated with the ERMeCHS research clusters Popular Culture and Inequalities (PCI) and Responsible Organizations, Communication, Change and Society (ROCCS).
She has not supervised any students yet, as she is still completing her doctoral studies. There is no mention of lab leadership or team coordination, but she collaborates closely with a research team led by Dr. van Sterkenburg.
