Laura Bassi

Laura Bassi (1711–1778) was the first woman to hold a university professorship, becoming a professor of Natural Philosophy and Experimental Physics at the University of Bologna. Her academic journey was marked by exceptional achievements, including earning a doctorate in philosophy in 1732, becoming an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences, and delivering her first lecture at the Archiginnasio. Despite societal constraints, she pursued advanced studies under scholars like Gabriele Manfredi and Iacopo Beccari, engaging with Newtonian physics and mathematical analysis. Though excluded from routine teaching duties and receiving a reduced stipend, she persisted in scientific inquiry. She married Giuseppe Veratti in 1738, a fellow scientist, and together they had eight children.
