Marian J.R. Gilton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh and a Resident Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science. She holds joint affiliations with the Classics, Philosophy, & Ancient Science Department, History Department, Philosophy Department, and World History Center.
Her research centers on the conceptual and mathematical foundations of contemporary particle physics, with specific focus on charge properties in classical and quantum field theories, the historical development of quantum mechanics, and Aristotelian-Newtonian metaphysical connections. Secondary interests include deontic logic applications to moral reasoning and historical contributions of women like Laura Bassi and Émilie Du Châtelet to Newtonian physics. She emphasizes intellectual virtues such as patience, humility, and courage in her teaching philosophy.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent trajectory examining property interpretation in physics (2022), metaphysical status of physical quantities (2020), and historical origins of quantum principles (2016). This work bridges technical physics formalism with philosophical analysis, particularly regarding Noether's theorem, gauge theories, and quantum measurement.
As Director of Graduate Admissions, she oversees HPS graduate programs while teaching courses ranging from graduate-level Newton studies to undergraduate Scientific Reasoning. Her educational approach integrates growth mindset principles developed through the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program.
