Laura Alakukku is a Professor of Agricultural Environmental Technology and Vice Dean (Infra) at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Helsinki. She leads research in soil management, agrotechnology, and sustainable agriculture. Her affiliations include the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Department of Agricultural Sciences. She supervises doctoral programs in Microbiology and Biotechnology and Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources.
Her research focuses on soil health, crop rotation impacts, and climate-smart agricultural systems. Key projects include Water & Food Futures and InterEarth RESET, addressing sustainable water-food systems and interdisciplinary sustainability science. She has received the prestigious Member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters (2013).
Alakukku has over 230 publications and 32 research projects, emphasizing soil carbon dynamics, drainage systems, and remote sensing applications. She actively peer-reviews journals like Soil & Tillage Research and Pedosphere, and engages in policy advocacy for sustainable agriculture through initiatives like the Leg4Life project.
Her work spans experimental fields in Finland and Kenya, exploring topics like dew collection, crop residue management, and regenerative practices. She also contributes to infrastructure development, such as the Hyytiälä Living Lab, advancing wood construction and agricultural technology.
