Lars Helgert

Lars Helgert is a Lecturer in Musicology at the University of Maryland's School of Music, Department of Musicology & Ethnomusicology. Appointed in Fall 2021, he teaches courses in music history and related disciplines.

His educational background includes:

• B.M. in Classical Guitar Performance from George Washington University
• B.A. in History from George Washington University
• M.M. in Classical Guitar Performance from Catholic University of America
• Ph.D. in Musicology from Catholic University of America

Dr. Helgert's research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American music across various styles, with particular emphasis on immigrant musical traditions. His scholarly work has been published in The Grove Dictionary of American Music, Journal of the Society for American Music, American Music Research Center Journal, and Encyclopedia of Latin American Popular Music, among other prestigious outlets.

He has presented research at major conferences including the American Musicological Society, Society for American Music, German Studies Association, and international conferences in Canada, Italy, and New Zealand. Prior to joining Maryland, he taught at Georgetown University, Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, and Catholic University's Rome School of Music.

Dr. Helgert maintains an active performance career as a classical guitarist in the Washington, D.C. area and works as a freelance writer and editor, bringing practical musical experience to complement his academic scholarship.
