Lars Hallstrom serves as Professor and Director of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy at the University of Lethbridge, a position he assumed in January 2021. The Prentice Institute, established in 2009 through an $8.25 million endowment from entrepreneur John Prentice, operates as a cross-faculty research hub examining demographic, economic, and social consequences of global population shifts.
His academic foundation includes a BA in Political Science from the University of Calgary (1995) and MA/PhD in Political Science from Purdue University. Prior appointments include Professor and Canada Research Chair in Public Policy and Governance at St. Francis Xavier University, followed by directorship of the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities at the University of Alberta (2009-2020).
Hallstrom's research spans Public Policy, Environmental Governance, and Rural Development with distinctive focus on Canadian contexts. His work critically examines multi-level governance structures, citizen engagement in sustainability planning, and intersections between resource development, public health, and rural community resilience. Recent publications demonstrate consistent emphasis on Alberta case studies while addressing universal challenges in demographic transitions and policy implementation.
As Prentice Institute Director, Hallstrom leads interdisciplinary initiatives connecting scholars across faculties to generate evidence-based solutions for population-related economic and social challenges, positioning the institute as Alberta's nexus for demographic futures research.
