Lars Burman is Professor of Literary Studies at Uppsala University's Department of Literary Studies and Rhetoric within the Faculty of Arts. After serving as Chief Librarian at Uppsala University Library from September 2012 to July 2024, he returned to his academic position on August 1, 2024. His extensive career includes serving as Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University (2003-2012), Head of the Department of Literary Studies (2004-2010), and Inspector of Värmland's nation (2004-2024). He is also a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and has served on various boards including LIBER (2018-2024) and SVT (2009-2017).
Burman received his doctorate in Literary Studies in 1990 and has been Professor of Literary Studies since 2001. His research spans early modern literature from literary sociology and rhetorical perspectives, textual criticism, the history of student democracy, and the role of university libraries in scientific processes. He has published extensively on Swedish literary history, particularly focusing on 17th-18th century student culture, rhetoric, and the works of C.J.L. Almqvist.
His recent publications reveal a consistent scholarly trajectory examining historical student culture, rhetorical practices, and university library systems. The 15 most recent articles demonstrate his dual expertise in literary history and library science, with particular focus on early modern Swedish student traditions, literary criticism, and contemporary library challenges. His work often bridges historical analysis with current academic concerns, especially regarding the evolving role of university libraries.
Burman has held significant leadership positions including membership in KVSU, KHVSU, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Uppsala). His academic career has been deeply intertwined with Uppsala University's institutional development, particularly through his twelve-year tenure as university librarian where he oversaw major transitions in academic information systems.
Married to associate professor and author Carina Burman since 1983, he has three children. His ongoing research projects include "Apollo's Disciples" (a collective biography of early modern Uppsala students), studies on student influence as a democratic asset, and editorial work on C.J.L. Almqvist's textbooks for the Collected Works.
