Lars Brännström is a Professor of Social Work with a Specialization in Quantitative Methods and an Associate Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University. He is affiliated with the Department of Social Work and the Quantitative Criminology Research Group. His research focuses on interdisciplinary topics at the intersection of Social Work, Sociology, Epidemiology, and Public Health, with a focus on vulnerable populations such as individuals with experiences of the child welfare system and foster care. His work emphasizes longitudinal studies using register data to examine social, economic, and health-related inequalities.
Current research projects include investigations into the trajectories of individuals through the child welfare system, the long-term outcomes of foster care placements, and the effectiveness of interventions targeting vulnerable populations. Notable projects include the Municipal Child Welfare Study and the Foster Children as Midlife Adults project.
Brännström's research often explores the mechanisms underlying disparities in educational achievement, criminal behavior, and health outcomes among populations exposed to out-of-home care. His work highlights the cumulative impact of adversity across the life course and identifies pathways for policy intervention.
His publications span topics such as the mortality risks of child welfare clients, the effectiveness of community-based alcohol policies, and the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage. These studies employ advanced quantitative methodologies, including multilevel modeling and propensity score matching.
Brännström collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and engages with policy stakeholders to translate research findings into actionable strategies. His contributions have informed child welfare practices and public health policy in Sweden and beyond.
