Larry Scanlon is an Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University's Department of English. His primary research focuses on Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Literature, Cultural Studies, and Gender and Sexuality. He has authored Narrative, Authority, and Power: The Medieval Exemplum and the Chaucerian Tradition (1994) and co-edited John Lydgate: Poetry, Culture, and Lancastrian England (2006). His current projects include a study on homoeroticism in later medieval literature titled At Sodom's Gate and an anthology on race and religious alterity in medieval culture.
Scanlon holds a PhD and MA from Johns Hopkins University and a BA from Brandeis University. He has taught courses ranging from medieval literature to Marxist literary theory and serves as Director of the Program in Medieval Studies at Rutgers. His awards include the Phoenix Award (Runner-Up) for editorial work on Studies in the Age of Chaucer and a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship.
His academic contributions span literary theory, medieval cultural discourse, and interdisciplinary studies of sexuality, race, and religion. Scanlon’s work bridges medieval and modern contexts, notably exploring intersections between Chaucerian traditions and African-American literature.
