Larry Au is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at The City College of New York (CUNY), affiliated with the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University and specializes in medical sociology, science and technology studies, and global health policy. His research focuses on precision medicine, China's biomedical innovation, and ethical dimensions of emerging technologies. Key themes include sociotechnical imaginaries in pandemics, post-COVID-19 symptom politics, and the globalization of biomedical fields.
Dr. Au’s work has been funded by prestigious organizations including the Luce Foundation, Social Science Research Council, NSF, NIH, and the Precision Medicine and Society Program. His research has been published in journals such as Science, Technology, and Human Values, Public Understanding of Science, and Social Science & Medicine. He teaches courses on health sociology, science policy, and global health inequities.
His recent studies analyze algorithmic bias in healthcare, trust dynamics in scientific communication, and organizational challenges in biotechnology translation. Dr. Au advocates for equity-centered global health responses, particularly regarding long-COVID and precision medicine governance.
