Dr. Völlnagel's research examines how teachers select popular subjects for German language instruction, particularly focusing on digital media. She investigates the tension between popular content and canonical school curriculum, analyzing teachers' roles as gatekeepers in educational content selection. Her work explores factors influencing the integration of popular content into school curricula and the implications for literature didactics, with digital media serving as a key case study due to its position between popular reception and school legitimacy.
Prior to her current research position, she gained practical teaching experience at Clara Schumann Comprehensive School and a primary school in Kreuztal (2020-2024), and worked as a Research Assistant in Educational Science focusing on organizational conditions of social services (2023-2025).
