Lara Dick is a Professor of Mathematics at Bucknell University, where she joined in 2014 after teaching high school for two years and instructing at Meredith College for six years. She teaches specialized courses for future K-12 mathematics teachers alongside introductory statistics and calculus courses.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. from North Carolina State University
- M.S. from North Carolina State University
- B.A. and B.S. from Meredith College
Dr. Dick's research investigates how prospective and practicing teachers develop through engagement with K-12 students' mathematical thinking, specifically examining teacher professional noticing capabilities and mathematical discourse structures. She explores how educators perceive and respond to student thinking patterns and how classroom conversations can be optimized for deeper mathematical understanding.
Analysis of her 2017-2019 publications reveals a cohesive research trajectory centered on professional noticing in mathematics teacher education, with progressive incorporation of technological tools. These works collectively advance methodologies for teacher training and classroom observation frameworks within mathematics education.
She maintains an active mentorship role with undergraduate research students, guiding them from initial curiosity to formulated research questions in mathematics education. Additionally, she served as a consultant for the NSF-funded PTMT-ESP grant (2018-present), which develops protocols for integrating technology into mathematics teacher preparation programs.
