Dr. Lance Baker serves as Professor of Animal Science in the Department of Agricultural Sciences at West Texas A&M University's Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, where he has contributed since 1995 through teaching, research, and leadership in the Equine Industry Program.
His academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, Texas Tech University
- Master of Science in Animal Nutrition, Oklahoma State University
- Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Nutrition, Oklahoma State University
Dr. Baker's research program focuses on equine nutrition, mineral nutrition, and exercise physiology, with data cited 25 times in the 2007 Equine NRC. This work establishes foundational standards for equine dietary requirements and performance optimization.
He has chaired or co-chaired 45 graduate students (2 Ph.D., 43 M.S.) and teaches core courses including Equine Care & Management, Equine Science & Production, and Principles of Animal Nutrition. As Ranch Horse Team coach since 2020, he has secured multiple Champion and Reserve Champion titles in SHTX and NIRSHA Division I competitions.
Dr. Baker is a licensed judge for the American Quarter Horse Association (All-Around and Versatility Ranch Horse events) and National Reined Cow Horse Association, demonstrating active industry engagement beyond campus responsibilities.
