Laiz Souto is a Lecturer in Power Systems Engineering at the University of Bath's Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering. He holds affiliations with the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (SES), Centre for Climate Adaptation & Environment Research (CAER), and the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change. With over 10 years of international experience across 8 countries, his research focuses on enhancing power grid resilience against severe weather events and ensuring energy security through interdisciplinary approaches. His work spans large-scale transmission/distribution systems, smart grids, and long-term planning strategies.
Education includes a PhD in Electrical Engineering and AI from Universitat de Girona (2021), MSc in Electric Power Systems from University of São Paulo (2016), and a BEng in Electrical Engineering from the same institution (2014). Key projects include the EPSRC Supergen Energy Networks Hub and D-RES (UKRI-STFC/DAFNI-funded). He serves on IEEE PES, CIGRE WG D2.52 (AI in power systems), and other industry advisory groups.
Research outputs emphasize probabilistic risk assessment, weather-grid interaction modeling, and resilience-enhancing technologies. Notable contributions include lightning protection strategies, heatwave impact studies, and EV-integrated grid management frameworks. External roles include Visiting Professorships at Northeast Electric Power University and collaborative research posts at Fraunhofer IEE and Technical University of Denmark.
