Dr. Robin Preece is a Reader in Future Power Systems at the University of Manchester's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He holds a BEng (2009) and PhD (2013) from the same institution, followed by postdoctoral and academic roles since 2014. His research focuses on power system security, dynamic performance of AC/DC grids, and uncertainty-driven stability analysis. Key interests include stochastic security assessment, integration of VSC-HVDC and energy storage, and risk-based approaches to system resilience.
He is a Senior Member of IEEE PES, Chartered Engineer (IET), and Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. Preece has over 60 international publications, speaks at leading conferences, and advises DNOs/TSOs. Teaching roles include unit leadership for power systems analysis (EEEN30047/40312) and supervision of 4th-year team projects.
His projects address grid-scale storage interfaces (Inter-Storage), power electronic transformers (PEET), and energy network resilience (SUPERGEN). Recent work explores cascading outages mitigation, compressed air storage modeling, and MMC-HVDC stability under time delays.
Key achievements include developing probabilistic stability frameworks, advancing VSC-HVDC control strategies, and contributing to standards via CIGRE/IEEE collaborations. Current opportunities focus on emerging technologies' impact on stability, uncertainty quantification, and non-conventional generation services.
