L. Lamar Wilson is an Assistant Professor at Florida State University, focusing on Creative Writing and African-American Literature. He previously held faculty roles at Davidson College, the University of Alabama, and Wake Forest University. His work intertwines cross-genre writing with themes of Black, Indigenous, and marginalized voices in the rural South. Wilson is the author of Sacrilegion and co-author of Prime: Poetry and Conversation. His film The Changing Same won awards at the Reel Sisters and New Orleans Film Festivals, blending documentary and virtual reality to explore racial and cultural narratives.
Wilson’s research interests span multi-ethnic American poetics, gender studies, and performance. He earned an MFA from Virginia Tech and a PhD from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His writing appears in The New York Times, NPR, and peer-reviewed journals like Callaloo and African American Review. He also teaches in the Mississippi University for Women’s low-residency MFA program.
Key awards include the Thom Gunn Award finalist status, Pushcart Prize nominations, and fellowships from Cave Canem and the Hurston-Wright Foundation. His creative and scholarly works address intersectionality, historical trauma, and cultural resilience, often centering Southern Black experiences.
