Kyra Hunting is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Community Engagement in the School of Journalism and Media at the University of Kentucky. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (2014), an M.A. in College Teaching from Michigan State University (2009), and a B.A. from Oberlin College (2005). Her research focuses on gender representation in media, particularly children's media and fandom cultures, with an emphasis on feminist critiques and industrial intertextuality. She has conducted studies on Disney franchises, gender disparities in media consumption during the pandemic, and the intersection of media with youth culture. Dr. Hunting’s work bridges critical/cultural media studies with quantitative methodologies, advocating for hybrid analytical approaches.
Her funded research includes projects examining gender representation in Disney Princess films, brand strategies in children’s TV networks, and the impact of pandemic media use on children. She has published widely on topics like queer aesthetics in LEGO Batman, fan communities’ gendered hierarchies, and the role of memes in political discourse. Her methodological contributions include integrating numerical data into critical media analyses. Dr. Hunting’s academic leadership includes administrative roles that emphasize community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration.
