Kym Bird is a Professor in York University's Department of Humanities within the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Her research examines Canadian theatre history with specialization in women's drama, feminist theatre, and nationalism in performance from the 19th century to present. She teaches courses spanning English literature, theatre studies, and women's studies.
Bird received multiple honors in 1997 including the Parents' Association University-Wide Teaching Award, Graduate Studies Dissertation Prize, and Division of Humanities Excellence in Teaching Award. Her dissertation was nominated for the Governor General’s Gold Medal. The Association of Canadian Theatre Research awarded her the 2004 Ann Saddlemyer Award for the book Redressing the Past: The Politics of Early English-Canadian Women's Drama, 1880-1920.
Research explores the intersection of gender politics and performance, recovering works by early Canadian women dramatists and analyzing feminist interventions in theatre historiography. Recent publications include archival studies of 19th-century plays and critical analyses of contemporary feminist theatre companies.
