Kyle Whyte is the George Willis Pack Professor at the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) of the University of Michigan, teaching in the environmental justice specialization. He serves as founding Faculty Director of the Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment and Principal Investigator of the Energy Equity Project, with additional affiliate appointments in Native American Studies and Philosophy.
His research centers on environmental justice, specifically addressing moral and political dimensions of climate policy affecting Indigenous peoples, ethical frameworks for Indigenous-science collaborations, and Indigenous justice within food sovereignty, environmental policy, and anthropocene discourse. As an enrolled Citizen Potawatomi Nation member, his work integrates Indigenous knowledge systems with academic scholarship to challenge colonial paradigms in environmental governance.
Whyte holds influential policy positions including U.S. Science Envoy and White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council member. He leads the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition and Pesticide Action Network North America as Board President, while previously contributing to the U.S. National Climate Assessment and IPCC Working Group II reports. His career demonstrates sustained engagement with federal and state environmental justice initiatives through roles on the Interior Department's Climate Change Advisory Committee and Michigan gubernatorial work groups.
Through institutional leadership at the Tishman Center and Energy Equity Project, Whyte drives interdisciplinary work connecting Indigenous communities with scientific institutions, shaping national conversations on equitable climate adaptation and centering Indigenous sovereignty in environmental decision-making processes.
