Kyle Vanderburg (b. 1986) serves as Composer in Residence at the Challey School of Music at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. His position, while formally titled 'Composer in Residence,' functions as a full faculty role within the Composition department where he maintains an office in Challey Hall and teaches various courses including composition, audio engineering, music theory, and music entrepreneurship.
Vanderburg's research and creative work explores the intersection of 'this sounds familiar' and 'what was that!?,' with particular focus on nostalgia, memory, and place. His compositional process blends delusions of grandeur, discouragement, and maniacal laughter, resulting in works that span traditional acoustic composition, electronic music, and interactive performance systems. He has developed innovative approaches to composition pedagogy and created web applications through his company NoteForge to support music education administration.
His compositions have been performed internationally at venues including the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS), New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF), Sonorities (UK), Festival Futura (France), and MUSLAB (Mexico). His recent works demonstrate a continued exploration of mixed meter, interdisciplinary connections, and audience engagement through technology.
- The American Prize (finalist and honorable mention in various composition categories)
- Releases on Ablaze, Ravello, Zorno, and Cero Records
Vanderburg actively mentors students through composition instruction and has developed unique pedagogical approaches including allowing students to choose their own curriculum. His consulting work extends beyond composition to include web development for music schools, publishing through the NDSU Press where he serves as assistant acquisitions editor, and interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists on projects like 'Cascades,' which sonifies climate data.
His creative practice spans multiple domains including composition, sound art, furniture building, and letterpress printing, reflecting his belief that 'proper time management' is overrated. He maintains an active performance schedule with upcoming events including presentations of 'Tape Piece' at the ATMI Concert in October 2025.
