Kyle McLeod is an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Kentucky. He joined the university in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. Dr. McLeod serves as Vice Chair of the University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (since 2021). Prior to his current role, he was a Research Animal Scientist and Leader of the Energy Metabolism Unit at the USDA Agricultural Research Service (1995-2001).
His research focuses on nutritional physiology in livestock and horses, with emphasis on:
- Metabolic disorders (e.g., insulin dysregulation in horses)
- Impacts of ergot alkaloids and fescue toxicosis in ruminants
- Gut health and inflammation dynamics
- Alternative feed ingredients like industrial hemp and essential oils
- Strategies for reducing enteric methane emissions in cattle
Dr. McLeod's recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on equine metabolic health, nutraceutical interventions, and sustainable livestock nutrition. His work frequently employs in vivo and in vitro models to examine metabolic pathways, gut-liver interactions, and dietary mitigation strategies for toxins.
He maintains active collaborations with agricultural research institutions and has contributed to international conferences including the European Equine Health and Nutrition Congress. His laboratory investigates protein turnover mechanisms, rumen fermentation optimization, and cannabinoid impacts on animal physiology.
