Dr. David Harmon serves as a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. With continuous service since 1995 and Director of Graduate Studies since 2002, he has established himself as a leading researcher in animal nutrition with particular expertise in ruminant nutrition, gut metabolism, and the effects of ergot alkaloids on cattle.
Dr. Harmon's research program has focused on identifying relationships between diet digestion, gut metabolism, and nutrient absorption in ruminants and companion animals. His work spans several key areas:
- Beef nutrition and physiology
- Serotonin metabolism and its role in feed intake regulation
- Tall fescue toxicosis and ergot alkaloid effects
- Starch digestion and small intestinal nutrient absorption
- Feed additives for improving animal performance and reducing environmental impacts
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the mechanisms behind tall fescue toxicosis, particularly examining how ergot alkaloids affect serotonin pathways and vascular function in cattle. His work also explores innovative feed additives like kelp blends, hemp by-products, and essential oil compounds to improve animal performance while addressing environmental concerns like methane emissions.

Dr. Harmon leads an active research laboratory focused on ruminant nutrition and physiology, with particular emphasis on understanding the mechanisms behind feed intake regulation and nutrient utilization. His team employs advanced techniques including in vitro fermentation systems, molecular biology approaches, and physiological measurements to investigate complex nutrition questions.
