Winthrop Universityمعرفی
Kyle G. Sweeney is an Associate Professor of Art History at Winthrop University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. His research focuses on late medieval European art and architecture (c. 1300–1550), particularly the interplay between urban space, ceremonial practices, and social constructs in northern Europe. He co-edited Lateness and Modernity in Medieval Architecture (Brill, 2023) and leads a book project on Normandy's Late Gothic architecture and urban identity. Sweeney teaches courses on medieval art, Islamic architecture, spatial humanities, and cultural heritage, integrating digital tools like VR to enhance student engagement.
His academic awards include the 2023 Lorraine Kochanske Stock Grant and a Kress Foundation grant. Sweeney serves on the AVISTA Board and actively publishes in journals like Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. His work bridges historical analysis with innovative pedagogy, emphasizing experiential learning through projects like student-designed medieval pilgrimage artifacts.
Research interests span medieval cities, intercultural interaction, and historical visualization. He explores how architecture shaped social hierarchies and urban identity, as seen in studies of Louviers' Notre-Dame church and its evolving symbolism. Sweeney's projects often highlight technology's role in reimagining medieval spaces, from 15th-century Normandy to digital reconstructions today.
